SAMSUNG POWERBOT ROBOTIC VACUUM CLEANERS

January 2, 2020 by Jennifer Melton Leave a Comment

The line of powerful robotic vacuum cleaners from Samsung was presented on IFA 2014. These models have original design and high suction power. Powerbot model of 2015 year supports a control via Wi-Fi using the mobile application.

Robot has a modern design in high-tech style.

The kinematic scheme is traditional. Axes of driving wheels are located at the same distance from the center (excluding a rectangular front part). But housing shape does not provide a full reversal on the spot. Therefore detour of obstacles is carried out in two stages. Robot moves back and changes the direction. Of course, this reduces maneuverability.

Robot movement in narrow space also is difficult due to lack of sensors in the rear part.

Maximum height is 135 mm.

Height decreases slightly in front.

Of course, such height significantly reduces available zone for cleaning (for example, floor under low sofa or chair).

Large diameter of drive wheels (105 mm), deep rubber tread and spring-loaded suspension (vertical free wheeling is 27 mm) provide very good passability. Robot is easy overcomes the obstacles up to 20 mm in height that is a very good indicator.

Cleaning is carried out as follows. The main brush captures debris and directs it to the suction opening. Side brush is absent. Garbage collection in the corners, near the walls and furniture is carried out with the help of air ducts in the form of grooves. They are placed in front of the bottom. Air is cleaned of dust by cyclone way.

Scheme of clearing is shown in Figure.

Air is sucked into cyclone chamber (1) and strongly twists by upward spiral (2). Centrifugal force pushes debris to the chamber walls and throws in a dust collector through an opening at the top. Air flows into central part of chamber (3) and passes through the pre-motor filter that clears the air of a light and fine dust. Then, air is directed into compartment with fan (4).

Dust collector is made of tinted transparent plastic for visual control of its filling degree.

Selecting the cleaning mode depends on the contamination degree. It’s determined by using IR sensor and IR receiver between the brush and dust collector. Garbage is illuminated by sensor. Decrease in light transmission characterizes a contamination level.

Using the robot on a wet surface can damage it.

Model has the following cleaning modes:

  • Auto mode is for a single cleaning the entire surface;
  • Spot mode provides intensive cleaning of specific zone;
  • Max mode is intended for cleaning up to a full battery discharge;
  • Manual mode by using the remote control;
  • Silence mode for cleaning with reduced suction power and minimal noise;
  • Dust Sensor mode provides cleaning with switched on pollution sensor.

Cleaning time in automatic mode is programmed once or daily with a choice of auto or max mode.

Robot resumes cleaning after charging from a breakpoint.

Remote control provides mode selection, left-right rotation and forward movement.

Robot moves and cleans only when the button is pressed. Commands from remote control have priority compared to signals of sensor barrier and virtual wall.

Robot supports an additional control method with the help of red pointer in front.

It’s activated by Point Cleaning button on the remote. Robot is oriented in space with the help of infrared beam that coincides with a red spot. It detects a spot at a distance up to 50 cm. Stain is needed to render. Operating distance depends on the tilt angle. Maximum distance between the remote control and red spot is 3 meters (at a height of 1.5 meter).

Sound button on the remote is used to turn on and turn off the beeps.

Virtual Wall provides a barrier for robot movement at a distance of 2.5 meters.

Model has following advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:

  • Stylish design;
  • High suction power;
  • Formation of optimal motion path during cleaning;
  • Support for virtual walls;
  • Programming the cleaning time;
  • Resuming cleaning with breakpoint eliminates re-cleaning after recharging;
  • Innovative light pointer;
  • Sound notifications can be switched off.

Disadvantages

  • Robot height is a very large;
  • Noise level is a relatively high;
  • Average cleaning quality next to walls and furniture due to lack of side brushes;
  • Large size of the external power supply on base.
