Toastess TGK486 Cordless Glass Kettle

February 25, 2020 by Jennifer Melton Leave a Comment

I honestly don’t understand why more people don’t have electric kettles. They make heating water so convenient, especially if you have a model like the Toastess TGK486 Cordless Glass Kettle. I use this thing all the time to heat water for tea, hot cocoa, and even some soups. My family loves it (especially my daughter), and I love how easy and quick it makes it to heat water.

The thing that strikes me first about this kettle is its looks. It’s a glass kettle, not a plastic one, so you can get a great view of the water inside and also avoid that plastic-y taste that some kettles get. It has a concealed element that also helps keep the water tasting good. It’s easy to clean, which is definitely a good thing since I use it so often!

One of the main things I look for when buying any sort of kitchen appliance is how safe it is. This Toastess model has a lot of great safety features. First off, it has an auto boil and off switch that shuts the kettle off if it starts boiling. It will also shut off if plugged in dry or when lifted off the base. The lid snaps in tightly to make sure there are no accidental drips, and the on/off indicator light lets me see at a glance if it’s on or not.

Finally, the kettle can boil up to 1.7 quarts at time, which is plenty for me and the whole family.

Pros:

  • Auto Boil and Off: This is a nice little feature that I’ve found very useful. Once the kettle senses that the water is boiling it will shut off. That way you don’t waste any energy and there’s no risk of hurting the kettle. If you want it to keep going once it hits a boil, all you have to do is tap the button and it turns back on.
  • Other Safety Features: My seven year old daughter likes to make up instant hot cocoa from time to time, and is able to use this kettle with ease. I like knowing that it’ll turn off if she accidently turns it on without water in it. The entire thing feels very solid too, so I’m not worried about anything breaking off and causing burns.
  • Beautiful Design: This is a very good looking kettle – there’s really no other way to put it! The shape of the glass curves gently and looks really nice on the countertop.
  • Doesn’t Add Taste to the Water: The kettle is made of glass and has a concealed element, which means that there’s nothing adding any weird tastes to my tea. I’m also not worried about any weird chemicals that may be in plastic.

Cons:

    • Glass Can Get Hot: When water is boiling the glass part of the kettle can get very hot to the touch. This is to be expected from a kettle of this type, though. There’s nothing you can really do for it, but the design of the kettle is such that there’s really not much of a risk of bumping into the glass by accident anyway.
    • Measurements are in Metric: Depending on your preferences this may or may not be an issue for you. Personally, I don’t mind. It’s given me a way to teach my daughter a bit about other forms of measurement, so for me it’s actually a bit of a plus!

As both a cooking instructor and a busy mom, I love anything that can make my life in the kitchen easier. The Tastess TGK486 is a great kettle that does just that. It heats water quickly and efficiently, it’s safe enough that I don’t worry about my daughter using it, and it looks darn good while doing it! I’d definitely recommend it for anyone looking to add a kettle to their kitchen arsenal.
