Custom cake pans are hard to come by but in this post I’ll show you where to find them and some alternatives. The reason that custom made cake pans are so rare is because it’s neither cheap nor easy to make a one off pan. Most pans are made from molds that can easily repeat the process, making their bulk production profitable.
In order to get a completely custom cake pan you’re going to need to know someone who can work with aluminum. You can either go through the work of creating a mold and casting it as such, or you can work it out from a solid sheet of aluminum. The latter takes more skill, but it’s much more affordable. This is how custom, one-off car and motorcycle parts are usually made. It’s tough work, but you can use a mallet to form any shape out of aluminum you wish. Just remember, no seams and no angles that won’t allow the cake to come back out.
Now, if you don’t want to go to all that work to make a cake pan there’s an alternative (I don’t know many folks who would!). Get a cake pan that’s a similar shape to the final product that you’re looking for and carve it down from there. All you need to do the carving is a few different sizes of serrated knives.
A perfect example of this is that whale cake pans are hard to come by, but with the Airplane Pantastic Cake Pan it’s not too hard to trim it up to look like a whale! It’s much easier than you think it is to carve a cake, and you’ll probably get it right after the first or second test cake. There is also the Wilton Sports Ball Pan Set that allows you to create a sphere or hemisphere that can be carved into just about anything.
Custom cake pans are certainly rare, but with some creativity and carving you may not need one at all!
