If you want to save some money and do your own backyard landscape design there are plenty of ideas and options available to you. A quick search on the internet will show that there are lots of amateur landscaping enthusiasts who are willing to give advice on the best way to landscape your backyard. To get a really personal feel to a garden you need to do the landscape design yourself, but it definitely helps to have a few ideas to get you going.
When you first start designing your backyards landscaping design you should break it down into smaller sections. Think of your garden more as a layer of a house and then divide it up into separate rooms. Now divide it further into areas of a room, and you will find it much easier to see how everything fits together. This will also allow you to make sure each “room” has its own style and personality at the same time.
You should remember though that a garden rarely looks good if it is divided into lots of hard lines, so don’t be afraid of overlaps in your “rooms”. Just use it as a guide to get going and make the design process a bit easier.
Next you should think about what is going to create the individual spaces of the garden. For this you need some sort of height. It could be the boundary fence of the garden that’s creating it or a hedge, but either way you need to have a variety of heights in your garden if you want to make it interesting. The relative heights of different features will also play a big role in the feel of the different areas of the backyard so think carefully about how you are going to create the feel that you want.
Once you have decided on the layout of the backyard you then need to move onto which plants you are going to include. Generally you will use different plants for the backyard than you would the front yard as you are more interested in creating different and separate areas.
You want to provide a unique experience when you are in each of them. Usually you focus more on the look of the landscaping as a whole in the front yard because that is what most people will see when they are travelling past. Selecting the types of trees, flowers, accessories and plants are the next step in planning the design. Plant selection is an important part of the landscaping process but don’t think that it is all there is to think about. Keep in mind that the layout and heights of the garden are just as important in most cases. The first impression of a visitor will be determined by the overall picture. The higher trees and plants should be layered so as not to take away from the flowering or lower plants.
