Choosing Between a Pergola, Canopy, Gazebo, or Awning

January 14, 2020 by Jennifer Melton Leave a Comment

When winter is drawing to a close, the thought of spring and summer gets everyone into the mind frame of outdoor living and entertaining. Most of us simply want a place to relax under some shade on a backyard deck or patio. Luckily, today’s market is full of choices including the various styles and sizes of pergola, canopy, gazebo, or awning shelters. You should be able to find a shelter that is well within your summer budget and quite beneficial for all kinds of outdoor activities. Choosing between the various choices can be a bit difficult especially if you don’t know the difference between the various types of shelters.

A gazebo canopy is big enough for the whole family to dine in; many come with mosquito netting side panels so you can enjoy it at night when the bugs come out. There is a wide variety of color and style choices that are sure to fit any backyard or garden décor. Make sure the one you buy has tie downs or anchors included for safety reason. Most come complete in a box and are easy to erect and tie down.

A pergola can be attached to your house or free standing and used as a focal point in the backyard or garden. Most are made out of wood, and the slats at the top form your shade but do not fully cover the area below. If you are looking for complete shade, a pergola is not a good choice for you. You can purchase a pergola kit or buy plans online which you can build yourself but you will need to shop for all of the supplies.

A canopy can range from small, stand alone shelters that are perfect for the backyard by the pool or to take along to the beach. Canopies can also be quite large and intended to be attached next to your house to cover a deck or patio area. Canopies usually have a fabric cover that is waterproof; some even offer UV protection. Canopies should also be tied or anchored down if they are going to be used on a permanent basis. A canopy will likely be the least expensive type of outdoor shelter you run into in your search.

Awnings are similar to canopies but contain a solid cover and are usually made solely of metal materials. You can use a metal awning for entertainment purposes or even as a vehicle cover if needed. Whether you purchase a pergola canopy gazebo or awning, the choices are bountiful and any one can be used to enhance or add more function in backyard areas such as a garden, patio, or deck.
