January 14, 2020 by Jennifer Melton Leave a Comment

Creating a useful outdoor space is just as easy as creating one indoors; the only difference is that weather and wildlife must be considered. Each region has different climate and wildlife that play into outdoor decorating and must be considered specific to each area. There are general guidelines and ideas that make creating an outdoor space in any region easier than you may think.

As mentioned above, the weather must be considered for any specific region, but just about every region has to deal with some sun and some rain. It is sensible to consider using waterproof or water-resistant fabric for outdoor furnishings so they can remain outside and not have to be moved in and out every time you want to use them. Look for furniture whose structure is weather resistant, as well. Plain fabrics can be customized by using outdoor fabric paint and stencils available at any craft store.

Why should your outdoor party end when the sun goes down? Use lighting to allow for the fun to continue long after sunset. There are elaborate landscape lighting systems available, some even solar powered that will give your environment a friendly glow. Weather resistant lamps and lanterns are an alternative will give the area the feel of an indoor room outside. Inexpensive options are candles and strings of outdoor holiday lights strung in trees or on fences.

There are many little touches that can add comfort and convenience to you outdoor area. Uncomfortable chairs can be made softer by adding a cushion or throw pillow. Wooden crates can be painted and used for storage, footstools, or tables. An outdoor carpet or area rug can protect bare feet from hot or rough surfaces. A fan oscillating back and forth can provide a cool breeze and make the space more inviting on hot summer days.

Use of plants or retaining walls can separate the outdoor living space form other areas and create privacy. Potted plants or hanging baskets can provide color and a pleasant fragrance. Personalized trinkets and art can give your outdoor space personality and elegance. Whatever your style preference, keep comfort and function in mind and you can create an inviting and relaxing place that friends and family will enjoy for many years.
