Garden Trellis Netting For Garden Vegetables

January 14, 2020 by Jennifer Melton Leave a Comment

One of the most exciting and underused methods of home garden is with the use of garden trellis netting. And while this is certainly not a new method of gardening, most amateur gardeners are reluctant to give it a try. For one reason or another most people are more comfortable using cages or avoiding vine growing plants altogether. This is unfortunate, because many vine vegetable varieties have extended harvest times and more productive plants.

Tomatoes are an excellent example of a vegetable that can be grown with a garden trellis. Tomatoes come in two different types: determinate and indeterminate. The traditional bush varieties are determinate plants and tend to spread out. Indeterminate plants are more inclined to grow vertically, and excel on a trellis system. By implementing a garden netting solution you can actually grow your tomatoes vertically up the net.

The netting system is actually quite simple to use and can be installed in a matter of minutes. The netting requires a support structure to connect to. The types and style of supports that you use is entirely up to you. Some garden centers carry kits with pre-assorted trellises, or you can piece your own system together. The important thing to remember is that the system is of sufficient strength to support the weight of the crop in full harvest. For tomatoes this may not seem like too much, but if you grow a crop such as melons or pumpkin, you may be surprised at the weight it is required to hold.

Garden netting for trellises is typically woven into some form of wide grid. This allows you to weave the vines in and out of the lines without damaging the plant. Netting comes in a variety of different materials and will vary in durability, strength, and longevity. Find the netting that works best for you.
