Lap Pool 101

January 14, 2020 by Jennifer Melton Leave a Comment

Any fitness guru will tell you that swimming is one of the best forms of exercise. It is low impact and provides both a cardiovascular and strength training total body workout. However, sometimes it is difficult to obtain access to a pool in which to work out. A lap swimming pool right in your home would be ideal.

There are many options to choose from when considering purchasing a lap pool. Here we will review some of the options to help you narrow down exactly what you’re looking for.

Above Ground vs. Inground:
Both have their advantages. The above ground pool is typically less expensive and semi-portable, meaning you can move it inside for winter if necessary or take it with you when you move. However, they are also smaller than and not as sturdy as an inground one. Inground pools are more expensive but more permanent and better quality.

Outdoor vs. Indoor
This decision will of course depend on the climate in which you live and the space you have available. Most home pools are outdoor, building one indoor requires the added cost of building a structure to house the pool. However both are excellent choices.

Construction Material:
All above ground lap pools are made out of vinyl which is inexpensive, sturdy and easy to clean. In ground pools are constructed out of gunite, concrete, or fiberglass. All have their advantages and disadvantages. Gunite is flexible in that it can be made into a variety of shapes; this is rarely necessary for a lap pool that will be used solely for swimming laps. Fiberglass typically requires less maintenance.

Size:
Consider who will be using the pool. Will only one person at a time be swimming laps? Will it also be sued for recreation? Be sure and realistically consider how you want to use the pool to ensure you get the best use out of it.

These considerations should get you started and on your way to purchasing your own pool and on your way to better health.
