What Is Better For Grilling Propane or Natural Gas?

January 14, 2020 by Jennifer Melton Leave a Comment

Over the years, advances in technology have brought several important changes in equipment we use around the home. For example, while in the 90’s televisions were still using a tube today almost all TV’s on sale use LED projection mechanism. This improvement in TV has seen much larger screens, clearer picture and advanced sound systems.

In grill equipment, likewise the introduction of gas- fueled grills has overtaken the use of charcoal and appears set to push these old grills into relics. With the change has come the tough choice between propane or natural gas grills. While they cost relatively the same, moving forward with the wrong choice could be costly in the long run and a s such people are often curious on which design is best.

Fortunately, this is nothing like making the choice between VHS and Betamax given both are widely available and choosing is often a question of what will give the greatest convenience. Both gases create a similar carbon footprint on the environment and therefore this should not be major concern to any buyers worried about green products.

Propane Gas grilling Equipment
Currently propane gas grills appear to have the upper hand in the battle between propane or natural gas. This is evident given that 60% of purchases and models in the market use propane gas as fuel. It is important to mention that this is not by chance but rather due to several advantages related to this gas including:

  • The gas is widely available in refillable tanks that can be exchanged at most convenience stores in many parts of the country. The most common propane tank is the 20lb tank though you can also buy smaller 1lb disposable tanks for use while on the road. The 20lb tank delivers approximately 25 hours of cooking time.
  • Propane gas on combustion delivers approximately 2500 BTU’s per unit in comparison to 1000 BTU’s per unit for natural gas. This means propane can get hotter and accomplish more than natural gas.

However, the popular option is not without disadvantages

  • In the battle between propane or natural gas based on price, natural gas wins. It’s much cheaper.
  • Propane is also more prone to exploding than natural gas and has tendency to create wet heat that can alter texture of food on your grill.

Natural Gas Grilling Installation
On the other hand, natural gas also has advantages that make it preferable in specific settings including:

  • Natural gas is an installed component that is delivered directly to your house and if you live in allocation where the piping has already been done, it is comparatively cheap. According to estimates its only 1/6 the cost of propane thus making it very appealing for people who reside in regions with the necessary mechanisms.
  • It is even more environmentally friendly than propane possibly owing to the safe extraction procedures that do not harm the environment unlike propane that is extracted beneath the ground and processed sing harmful fuels.
  • It is also very convenient for the user given that you do not have to monitor the quantity remaining or spend time driving to a store to replace the tank.

With so much in its flavour then one would wonder how propane continues to win when comparing propane and natural gas. The question is really one of the poor or not yet established infrastructure that makes this option viable in restricted areas. For this reason, if you own a good natural gas grill you can only use it at home and will have to use propane fueled grill for any excursions away from home.
